As a proud member of the one percent of Pinterest users who didn’t already have a Dream Wedding board, I started a For Real Wedding board and began to explore the site’s “Weddings and Events” category. Within five minutes, it became apparent to me that I would need to locate a rustic barn surrounded by an endless field of wildflowers. According to Pinterest, that seems to be the only place people are getting married these days.

“Of course we put a trampoline on our wedding registry. Why not put a trampoline on your wedding registry, if you have the choice between not putting a trampoline on your wedding registry and putting a trampoline on your wedding registry?

I certainly never expected anyone to buy it for us. The thing is like $400. That is a ridiculous amount of money for a wedding present. [Jessica’s Note: Someone must not have read our post about Kim Kardashian’s wedding registry.] But our wedding party are a sneaky bunch, and they split the cost among them because they are wonderful and creative people who, and I think this idea must not have completely escaped them, are about to have friends who own a huge trampoline. I was especially surprised by their amazing generosity because I’ve never thought wedding party members should feel obligated to buy wedding presents. I’ve also never thought people who have to travel to attend a wedding should feel obligated to buy wedding presents. Many members of our wedding party are both in the wedding (obviously) and flying in from out of state. That shit is expensive, you guys. Your presence is the gift, right? The second emotion I had, after craaaaazy exxxciiitteeeddd exclamation points, hooray, was kind of embarrassed. Because I am 28-year-old woman who just got a trampoline for a wedding present. Clearly I’m not taking this marriage thing seriously. Clearly I should focus my attention on the nice sheets Patrick’s aunt bought us. Clearly I should begin making tiny cakes in the lovely Le Creuset cocottes that arrived in the mail last week. Like grown-ass wives do. But fuck it, you guys, I am the most excited about that trampoline.”

Hitched: Can You Throw A Cheap Wedding In The Age Of The Wedding Industrial Complex? We’re Trying - The Frisky

We started with a goal of spending $5,000 on a wedding for about 100 guests, which we thought we could reasonably be able to afford between the two of us. And believe me, I don’t consider $5,000 a drop in the bucket. It is a lot of money. And I know couples have thrown great weddings for far less — but when the average American wedding costs $27,800, Patrick and I are definitely flying coach on Wedding Industrial Airways.

It was important to me to pay for the wedding ourselves as much as possible, because I can be the world’s biggest doormat if I feel at all beholden to anyone else. I wanted an individualized, secular celebration-of-love party, and I knew if someone else was signing the credit card receipts, I’d be churching it up before my subdued country-club cocktail hour reception — and most likely at thrice the price.

Why did I get this huge chest tattoo right before my wedding? This is the question I have asked myself twice now, awakening from wedding-themed nightmares in a cold sweat. In my first dream, the chest tattoo I got was some adorable phrase in scripty font that looked lovely when I glanced down at myself but was huge and disgusting when I looked at it in the mirror. The second was a full-torso tribute to the Insane Clown Posse. What. The? My dress (thanks, Vivien of Holloway!) is strapless, or it will be when the seamstress gets done with it, so there’d certainly be no hiding an above-tit tattoo, even if I wanted to. And as I’m an ink-friendly lady, I have no problem with visible tattoos on brides, anyway, since I think they’re often very lovely. So what am I worried about?

There’s so much to hate about mainstream wedding culture — the consumerism, the gender policing, the fucking consumerism, the body-shaming, did I mention the consumerism? — but perhaps the wedding-related narrative that pisses me off more than any other is the idea that men are incapable of being interested in weddings and must be coddled and babied so that their delicate wedding-hating sensibilities are not offended. Apparently the men of Austin are so addled by the idea of marriage that they need a separate “Cufflink Lounge,” where they can “relax, play pool and more,” away from all that awful gross icky nasty wedding things ewwwwwww! I presume there are Axe-scented smelling salts at the ready in case some guy sees a slice of white cake and faints.
