Despite endless work by anti-sexual violence activists trying to change the narrative, the myth persists that rapists —at least so-called “date rapists” — are men who got a little out of control with lust one night and accidentally went too far. It doesn’t help that this is the story that we usually hear on those very rare occasions when rapists tell their side of the story, usually to escape social consequences or even jail. Wouldn’t it be funny if the boys that photographed themselves assaulting Savannah Dietrich got raped right now? Also, that priest, Monsignor Lynn, who is going to serve three to six years for failing to investigate sex abuse claims against priests — wouldn’t it be hilarious if he were raped in prison? And Jerry Sandusky? Just picture him in the showers with a bunch of bigger guys! Are you laughing? No? Well, that’s because imagining someone getting raped is about as humorous as imagining someone stepping on a landmine or getting car-jacked. It’s terrifying and no one deserves it. Last week we learned that Marissa Mayer, former VP of Google, would be heading to Yahoo as its new CEO. She’s be the company’s first female CEO and probably the first-ever pregnant CEO of a Fortune 500 tech company. Even if you couldn’t care less about Yahoo, you probably thought to yourself “yay for the ladies!” even just a smidge. Right now things kinda suck. I know. You wrote an oblivious-sounding piece about how you kind of wished you were getting the chance to be poor and scrappy in your 20s, like artistic people are supposed to be. Like the girls on “Girls,” which sometimes seems very realistic because Lena Dunham is the only young woman with any body fat on TV. And then the piece went up on HuffPo and then Gawker picked it up and now everyone is making fun of you. The Soapbox: Some Friendly Advice For That 22-Year-Old Girl Who Wishes She Was Poorer

Watching the city life dance below us, my friend and I stood on the rooftop, totally perplexed by what our summers were shaping into. Months before school got out, we were ecstatic about our “summer in the city” and all the adventures we would chase and the quirky New Yorkers we would befriend. Although we both have been experiencing moments this summer that will last a lifetime, I hope that some of the experiences my courageous friend has been facing will die in that bar.
