In my mid-twenties, I came out as a lesbian. But the hardest part wasn’t even coming out: it was realizing my wedding would be different and therefore I was different. It took me a few years to come to terms with the fact that my wedding wouldn’t have a groom or any of the other stuff that goes along with heterosexual weddings.
My dad is a very wise man. He knows when to keep his mouth shut, which is pretty much whenever it comes to my love life.
People gush and gah over the question of “whether” or “if” single women — a group of humans who all think and dream and live alike, apparently — are doomed to a lifetime of emotional anguish and soul-splitting loneliness. They wring their hands in ostensible angst on behalf of the Poor, Benighted Single Lady and offer aid and succor to the ignorant, selfish lambs who don’t know any better than to not get married.
Whatever you do, don’t lie. Remember, eventually you’ll have to determine whether or not this is someone you could ever love. Nothing is worse than giving false hope to a person that you don’t see a future with. You’ll only end up wasting your time and his. But in the meantime, Prince Charming is gazing into your eyes awaiting your response. The way I see it you have five options …
